The constituency was first contested in the 2010 general election and was won by Labour's Glenda Jackson with a majority of just 42, making it the second most marginal seat in the 2010 UK Parliament, after Fermanagh and South Tyrone. Hampstead and Kilburn is also the closest three-way marginal seat in the 2010 Parliament, as the third-placed candidate obtained just 841 fewer votes than Jackson, the winner.
The Rallings and Thrasher calculations for a media consortium of BBC, ITV, Sky and the Press Association are that on the new boundaries for this constituency the result in 2005 would have been Labour 15,138 (37%), Liberal Democrat 14,664 (36%), Conservative 9,559 (23%) and other parties 2,314, putting Labour 474 votes ahead.[2]
The constituency covers the north-western part of the London Borough of Camden and the far east of London Borough of Brent.
It is made up of seven electoral wards from the London Borough of Camden:
and three electoral wards from the London Borough of Brent:
Following their review of parliamentary representation in North London, the Boundary Commission for England reduced the number of constituencies across the boroughs of Brent and Camden from five to four. The seat of Hampstead and Kilburn is a new creation resulting from these changes.[3] Hampstead Town ward, Belsize ward, Swiss Cottage ward, Frognal and Fitzjohns ward, Fortune Green ward, West Hampstead ward, Fortune Green ward and Kilburn (Camden) ward were transferred from the former constituency of Hampstead and Highgate. Brondesbury Park ward, Kilburn (Brent) ward and part of Queens Park ward were transferred from the former constituency of Brent East. A small part of Queens Park ward was transferred from the former constituency of Brent South.
